Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:24–27
In today’s passage, Apostle Paul turns to the inner posture that sustains a life of service. He uses the imagery of a race to remind us that spiritual growth requires intention. The Christian life is not aimless wandering. It is a focused pursuit of Christ, shaped by discipline, clarity, and purpose.
Here are three truths from today’s passage

Spiritual growth requires intentional pursuit. “Run in such a way as to get the prize.” Paul is not urging competition with others. He is calling us to live with intention and direction. Faith deepens when we move toward Christ with purpose, when we choose habits, rhythms, and practices that draw us closer to Him. We do not drift into maturity. We pursue it with a steady, willing heart.

Discipline protects what matters most. “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.” Athletes train because the goal is worth the effort. In the same way, spiritual discipline helps to protect us in our walk with God. Prayer, Scripture, worship, and obedience guard our focus and shape our desires. These practices do not earn God’s love, but they help us stay aligned with it. Discipline keeps the heart awake.

A clear aim keeps your life from becoming scattered. “I do not run like someone running aimlessly… I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave.” Paul refuses to let his impulses lead him away from Christ. He wants his life to reflect the gospel he preaches. Purpose brings clarity. Clarity brings steadiness. And steadiness keeps us from drifting into patterns that weaken our witness.
