Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:8–16

In this passage, Paul speaks with tenderness to believers navigating complicated relational seasons. Some were single and unsure if marriage was the right path. Others were married and wrestling with tension, disappointment, or spiritual mismatch. Paul reminds them that God meets His people not only in ideal circumstances but also in the difficult, confusing, and painful places of real relationships.

Here are three truths from today’s passage.

  1. Covenant love calls us to stay when it is possible. “A wife must not separate from her husband… and a husband must not divorce his wife.” Paul speaks to believers who were considering leaving their marriages for spiritual reasons. He reminds them that marriage is sacred and not something to abandon lightly. If separation does occur, reconciliation is the first hope.

  2. God can work through a believing spouse in unseen ways. “For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife…” Paul addresses believers married to unbelievers. Instead of urging separation, he offers hope. The presence of a believer in the home brings spiritual influence, blessing, and light. He affirms that God is at work in ways that may not yet be visible.

  3. Peace is God’s heart for His people. “But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. God has called us to live in peace.” Paul holds truth and tenderness together. If an unbelieving spouse chooses to leave, the believer is not bound to force the relationship to continue. God does not call His children to live in chaos. Covenant love is faithful, but it is never coercive. Peace is part of God’s calling.
