Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:1–7
In this passage, Paul responds to a statement circulating in the Corinthian church: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” Some believers were beginning to see marriage and physical intimacy as spiritually inferior. Paul gently corrects this misunderstanding. He affirms both marriage and singleness as gifts from God and teaches that intimacy within marriage is holy, mutual, and protective.
Here are three truths from today’s passage
-
Marriage is a place of mutual honor. “Each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband.” Marriage is not built on demand or dominance but on shared commitment and shared care. Intimacy is an expression of covenant love.
-
Intimacy is an expression of love and not leverage. “The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.” Intimacy should never be used for power or manipulation. It should be an act of love, service, and unity. In marriage, bodies are not bargaining chip, but gifts entrusted to one another.
-
Both marriage and singleness carry God’s grace. “I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God…” Marriage is a gift. Singleness is a gift. Each comes with purpose, beauty, and grace. Faithfulness matters more than comparison.
Pray with me: Dear Lord, please shape my desires, my relationships, and my commitments so they reflect Your heart. Help me walk faithfully in the calling You have given me.
