Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 6:7–11

In today’s passage, Apostle Paul addresses the deeper issue beneath the Corinthians’ conflicts. Their disputes, their insistence on winning, and their willingness to wrong one another all revealed they are not living in the consciousness of the gospel’s transforming power. He reminds them that the Christian life is not built on old patterns but on a new identity, shaped by the cleansing, sanctifying, and justifying work of Christ.

Here are three truths from today’s passage.

  1. Losing in love is better than winning without Christ. “The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already.” The real defeat is not losing a case but losing the character of Christ in the process. The gospel teaches us that being wronged is not the end of the world, but wronging others is a denial of who we are. Love is willing to absorb loss for the sake of unity.

  2. The old life cannot shape the new community. “Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God?” Paul reminds them that the old patterns and ways of life no longer belong in the family of God. The church is not a community of perfection, but it is a community of transformation. The old life cannot be the blueprint for the new one.

  3. The gospel gives us a new identity and a new way to live. “But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified…” This is the heart of the passage. Paul anchors everything in what God has already done.

Washed: cleansed from the stain of sin

Sanctified: set apart for God’s purposes

Justified: declared righteous through Christ

This is who we already are. Everything (conflict, relationships, decisions, etc.) must flow from this identity.
