Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 5:9–13

In this passage, Apostle Paul is giving instructions to shape the posture of the church. The Corinthians had misunderstood his earlier words and responded with the wrong kind of separation. Paul invites them to live with a posture of grace toward the world and a posture of honesty within the church. His message is about cultivating hearts that reflect Christ.

Here are three truths from today’s passage.

  1. Toward the world: a posture of grace and presence. Paul reminds the church that the world’s brokenness should not shock us or drive us away. We were once part of that same story. Our posture toward the world is compassion and not judgement. The world is not our enemy but our mission field.

  2. Toward the church: a posture of honesty and care. “You must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is…” Paul’s concern is not with unbelievers but with believers who openly reject the way of Christ. When someone claims Christ yet refuses His way, the community must respond with honesty. A healthy church practices truth in love because it longs for restoration.

  3. Toward ourselves: a posture of humility. “What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church?” We do not carry the burden of judging the world. That responsibility belongs to God. However, our responsibility is to examine our own lives with humility and to help one another grow. Humility keeps us from misdirected judgment.

Today’s passage calls us to live with a Christ-shaped posture:

grace toward the world, because we remember where we came from

honesty within the church, because we care about one another’s souls

humility before God, because He alone sees clearly
