Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 5:1–5
So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 5:4-5
In today’s passage, Apostle Paul confronts serious sin within the Corinthian church. Their response had been prideful tolerance rather than grief. Paul calls them to act, not from cruelty, but from a desire for restoration. Holy love does not ignore what destroys people. It tells the truth, sets boundaries, and seeks redemption.
Here are three truths from today’s passage:

Sin should produce grief, not pride. The Corinthians had become proud of their tolerance. Paul says they should have mourned. When sin damages a person or a community, love does not celebrate or excuse it. Love grieves because it understands the cost of brokenness.

The church has a responsibility to protect holiness. Paul instructs the community to remove the unrepentant person from fellowship. This action is serious, but it is not revenge. The church must protect the health of the body and make clear that persistent rebellion is incompatible with life in Christ.

Discipline should aim at restoration. Paul’s hope is that the person’s spirit may be saved. Biblical discipline is not about destruction but rescue. It creates space for repentance and reminds the wandering person of the seriousness of returning to Christ.
This passage invites us to hold truth and love together. Holy love does not ignore sin, and holiness does not abandon people. God calls His church to respond with grief, courage, and a longing for restoration.
Pray with me: Dear Lord, please give me a heart that grieves over sin and rejoices in restoration. Teach me to walk in truth, holiness, and love.
