Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 4:6–13

We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. 1 Corinthians 4:12-13

In today’s passage, Apostle Paul confronts the pride that had grown in the Corinthian church. They were acting as though they had already arrived, already ruled, and already possessed everything they needed. Paul contrasts their self-satisfaction with the costly path of the apostles. The way of Christ is not self-exaltation but humility, endurance, and sacrificial love.

Here are three truths from today’s passage:

  1. Pride forgets that everything is received. Paul asks, “What do you have that you did not receive?” Every gift, opportunity, and success comes from God. Boasting disappears when we remember that grace is the source of everything good in us.

  2. The way of the cross often looks weak to the world. The apostles experienced hunger, hardship, dishonor, and rejection. Their lives did not fit the world’s picture of success. Yet their weakness revealed Christ’s strength. God’s kingdom often advances through people who are willing to be overlooked and misunderstood.

  3. Christlike strength responds differently. When cursed, they blessed. When persecuted, they endured. When slandered, they answered kindly. This is the power of the cross at work in human relationships. Grace changes not only what we believe but how we respond when we are mistreated.

This passage invites us to embrace the way of the cross. To release pride, remember grace, and respond to hostility with the character of Christ. The world may call this weakness, but heaven calls it strength.
