Scripture Reading: Hebrews 10:1–18

For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. Hebrews 10:14

In today’s passage, we see that the old covenant sacrifices were never meant to be the final answer. They were shadows, pointing toward a greater reality. Year after year, the same offerings were made, yet guilt remained. But Christ’s sacrifice is different. It is final. It is perfect. It accomplishes what no animal sacrifice ever could: it makes us holy.

Here are three truths from today’s passage

  1. The law was a shadow, not the substance. The old covenant rituals were never designed to perfect the worshiper. They revealed sin but could not remove it. They reminded Israel of guilt but could not cleanse the conscience. The repetition itself was proof of their limitation. Shadows can point to something real, but they cannot replace it.

  2. Christ’s obedience fulfills God’s will completely. Jesus did not come to continue the old system; He came to fulfill it. His obedience, from incarnation to cross, accomplished what the law could not. By offering Himself, He sets aside the old covenant and establishes the new. His sacrifice is not one among many. It is the sacrifice that ends all sacrifices.

  3. Christ’s single offering perfects those who draw near. By one offering, He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. This is the breathtaking tension of the gospel: We are perfected in status. And we are being sanctified in practice. The work is finished, yet its effects continue to shape us. And the Holy Spirit Himself testifies that under the new covenant, God remembers our sins no more. Not because He forgets, but because He has forgiven.

This passage invites us to rest in the finality of Christ’s work. We do not live under the weight of repeated sacrifices or lingering guilt. We live under a Savior whose one offering is eternally effective. His blood cleanses. His covenant stands. His Spirit assures us that we belong to Him.

Pray with me: Dear Lord, thank You for the perfect sacrifice of Christ. Please help me rest in the completeness of His work, trust the cleansing of His blood, and walk in the freedom of a forgiven life.
