Scripture Reading: Hebrews 5:11–6:12

“Let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity…” Hebrews 6:1

In today’s passage, the writer of Hebrews addresses an important concern: spiritual immaturity. The believers had become slow to learn, not because they lacked intelligence, but because they lacked appetite. They were stuck on milk when they should have been eating solid food. They knew the basics, but they weren’t growing. The writer of Hebrews calls them, and by extension, us to move forward, to grow deeper, to mature in faith, and to persevere with diligence.

Here are three truths from today’s passage

  1. Spiritual maturity requires intentional growth. Growth doesn’t happen automatically. It requires hunger, discipline, and a willingness to be stretched. Sometimes growth might be uncomfortable. God invites us to move beyond the elementary truths and into deeper obedience, deeper understanding, and deeper trust.

  2. Immaturity is dangerous because it makes us vulnerable. Without maturity, discernment weakens, and deception increases. Immaturity is dangerous. It opens believers to all sort of erroneous doctrines and practices. Maturity protects us. It strengthens our ability to distinguish good from evil and truth from error.

  3. God is not unjust. He sees your work and your love. Even as the writer of Hebrews warns us, he also encourages us. God sees every act of service, every sacrifice, every moment of faithfulness. He is not blind to our labor or indifferent to our love.

This passage invites us to examine our spiritual appetite. Are we growing? Are we stretching? Are we moving forward? God’s desire is not that we remain infants in the faith, but that we become mature, discerning, and fruitful. The call to maturity is not about condemnation but an invitation. God wants us to persevere so that what He began in us reaches full maturity.
