Scripture Reading: Ephesians 5:21–33
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” Ephesians 5:25
In today’s passage, Apostle Paul writes about the heart of Christian relationships. He gives a foundational command: submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Mutual submission is the posture of a heart shaped by the gospel. It is not about power or control but love, humility, and Christlike service. Paul uses marriage as a living picture of the relationship between Christ and the church, showing how the gospel transforms the way we love.
Here are three truths from today’s passage:

Mutual submission flows from reverence for Christ. Submission is not about inferiority; it is about honoring Christ by putting others first. Paul calls us to a posture of humility. In marriage, this means each person seeks the good of the other. Christlike love is self-giving, not self-seeking.

Husbands are called to sacrificial love. Paul’s command to husbands is radical: love your wives as Christ loved the church. Christ’s love is sacrificial, purifying, and protective. He gave Himself up to make His bride holy. This kind of love is active, intentional, and costly. It leads, not by domination, but by laying down one’s life.

Wives are called to honor and respect. Paul calls wives to respect their husbands, not as a burden but as a reflection of the church’s devotion to Christ. Respect strengthens, encourages, and builds unity. When both husband and wife walk in their God-given roles, marriage becomes a living testimony of the gospel.
Today’s passage invites us to see marriage as more than companionship but a picture of Christ’s love for His people. Whether married or single, we are called to embody Christlike love: humble, sacrificial, honoring, and rooted in reverence for Him. When we love this way, we reflect the beauty of the gospel to the world.
