Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:1–6

“Live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” Ephesians 4:1

In the first three chapters of Ephesians, Apostle Paul was telling us who we are in Christ – chosen, sealed, strengthened, brought near. Now he tells us how to live in light of that identity. He writes these words from prison, yet his heart is full of urgency and tenderness. He wants believers to understand that the gospel doesn’t just change our status; it also changes our walk. Our calling is something we live out daily, in the way we treat one another and the way we guard the unity Christ purchased for us.

Here are three truths from today’s passage:

  1. Our calling shapes our character. Paul urges us to walk with humility, gentleness, patience, and love. These are spiritual postures that reflect the heart of Christ. A worthy walk is not loud or impressive; it is quiet strength, steady love, and a willingness to bear with others even when it’s difficult.

  2. Unity is our responsibility and our witness. Paul calls us to “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit.” Through the sacrifice of Christ, we have been brought to the unity of faith by the Spirit of God. But we are called to protect it, guard it and fight for it. The world can be divided, but the church is called to be one – one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.

  3. Our unity flows from our shared identity. We are one because we belong to the same Father. We share the same Spirit. We follow the same Lord. Unity is not built on similarity but on shared identity in Christ. When we remember who we are, we remember that we belong to one another.

This passage invites us to walk in a way that reflects the grace we’ve received. To let our character match our calling. To protect the unity Christ died to give us. And to live as one people under one God.
