Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2:1–10

“Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ…” Ephesians 2:4-5

As a result of the fall of Adam, mankind became spiritually dead. Not struggling. Not searching. Not slowly improving. Dead. But the beauty of the gospel is that God steps into death with life, into darkness with light, into hopelessness with mercy. Our story begins in brokenness, but it doesn’t end there. God moves toward us with a love that refuses to leave us as we are.

Here are three truths from this passage.

  1. We were dead, but God loved us anyway. “You were dead in your transgressions and sins…” Paul wants us to remember where grace found us. We weren’t reaching for God. We were following the world, our desires, and our own broken instincts. Yet God’s love was not deterred. He loved us at our lowest, when we had nothing to offer Him.

  2. God’s mercy is richer than our sin is deep. “But because of his great love… God, who is rich in mercy…” God’s mercy is abundant. It is overflowing. It is strong enough to reach into death and pull us into life. Mercy is not God looking the other way, it’s God stepping toward us with compassion and power. It is God bending toward us when we could not lift ourselves and His heart choosing restoration over judgment.

  3. We are alive because Christ is alive. Our salvation is not just forgiveness, it is resurrection. We share in Christ’s life, His victory and His position. Hence, we are seated with Him in the heavenly realms. We are seated with Christ not because we climbed our way up, but because He carried us there.

This passage invites us to marvel. To remember where we were, to rejoice in what God has done, and to walk confidently in the purpose He has prepared for us. We were dead, but now, in Christ, we are alive.
