Scripture Reading: Romans 13:8–14

“The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.” Romans 13:11

In today’s passage, Apostle Paul reminds us that the redeemed life is not passive or drowsy. It is awake, alert, and aware of the times. Because Christ has redeemed us and His return draws nearer each day, we cannot live as though we are still in the night. Paul calls believers to spiritual alertness, moral clarity, and a lifestyle that reflects the new identity we have received in Christ.

Here are three truths from today’s passage

Redemption calls us to a life of ongoing responsibility. Paul speaks of one debt that never disappears: the responsibility to love others. As redeemed people, we are called to live with a continual posture of loving and doing good to others. This ongoing responsibility to love becomes the lens through which we view each moment.

Redemption awakens us to the urgency of the moment. The redeemed life is lived with spiritual alertness, shaped by the reality that Christ is coming back soon. We are not meant to drift through life unaware. Instead, we are called to live each day intentionally, attentive to God’s voice and ready to respond to His leading.

Redemption demands a break with darkness. Because we belong to the day, we “put on the armor of light” and set aside the practices of our old life of darkness. This means actively choosing thoughts, words, and actions that honor Christ. The closer we walk with Christ, the more our lives radiate His character, encouraging others to awaken to His transformative love as well.

Today’s passage reminds us that redemption is not merely a one-time past event. It is a present calling. Christ has awakened us from spiritual sleep, and now we live with clarity, urgency, and purpose. To “wake up” is to recognize who we are in Christ and to live in a way that reflects the coming day. We cast off what no longer belongs to us and put on the One who redeemed us.

Pray with me: Dear Lord, please help me to live alert, aware, and aligned with Your purposes every day of my life!
