Scripture Reading: Romans 12:3–8
“Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” Romans 12:3
In today’s passage, Paul talks about how believers should respond to God’s mercy extended to mankind through Christ. He reminds us that the Christian life is about humility and service. In Christ, we are one body made up of many members, each with different functions. God has given gifts to His people by grace, and those gifts are meant to be used faithfully for the good of others.
Here are three truths from today’s passage:
Humility is essential. We are called to think of ourselves with sober judgment, recognizing that all we have is by God’s grace. As we acknowledge that our gifts and opportunities are given by God, we become more aware of our dependence on Him and the importance of building one another up.
There is unity in diversity. The body of Christ is made up of many members with different roles. Each gift is vital, and together we form one body in Christ. This unity, shaped by diversity, strengthens the church. It also reflects Christ’s love and wisdom to the world, inviting others to experience belonging and grace through service together.
Gifts are for service. Whether prophesying, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, or showing mercy, each gift must be exercised faithfully, generously, and cheerfully to build up the church. God gives gifts to believers primarily to serve the body of Christ. As each member embraces their unique gifts and contributes with faithfulness, the church becomes a vibrant expression of God’s grace in action.
Today’s passage teaches us that humility and service are inseparable from true discipleship. God’s grace equips each believer with gifts, and His design is that those gifts be used to strengthen the body of Christ. When we serve with humility and joy, the church flourishes and God is glorified.
