Scripture Reading: Romans 7:1–25
“What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Romans 7:24–25
In today’s passage, Paul explains the believer’s relationship to the law. Just as death releases a spouse from marriage, so also believers have died to the law through Christ and now belong to God. Sin exploits the law, exposing our weakness and enslaving us. But Christ releases us from the law, breaking the bondage of sin.
Here are three truths from this passage:
The law reveals sin but cannot save. While the law highlights sin’s presence in our hearts, it cannot provide the remedy we desperately need. Instead, it points us to our inability to achieve righteousness on our own, thereby leading us to long for a Savior.
Christ rescues us from sin’s power. Paul describes general human struggles: we desire to do good but often fail. Christ steps into this gap, offering not just forgiveness but the power to break free from sin’s grip. By uniting us with Himself, He transforms our desires and enables us to live in the freedom and victory the law could never grant.
We are released from the law to serve in the Spirit. Through Christ’s death, we are freed from the law’s binding authority. We now belong to Christ, serving in the new way of the Spirit rather than the old way of the written code. This new life in the Spirit enables us to bear fruit for God, no longer striving under the weight of regulations but empowered from within to pursue righteousness.
Our struggle with sin is real, but it is not the end of the story. Christ delivers us, making us alive to God and free to serve in the Spirit. Where the law exposes weakness, grace provides strength. The Spirit empowers our choices, renews our minds, and shapes our character so that, even in the midst of ongoing struggles, we find hope, renewal, and victory that reflect the transforming work of Christ in our lives.
Pray with me: Lord, thank You for releasing me from the law and rescuing me through Christ. Help me to walk in the Spirit, bearing fruit for Your glory.
