Scripture Reading: Romans 6:1–14
“In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” Romans 6:11
Paul confronts a dangerous misunderstanding: if grace abounds where sin increases, should we continue in sin? His answer is emphatic, by no means! Grace is not permission to sin but power to live a new life. Through union with Christ, believers have died to sin and risen to walk in righteousness. This passage invites us to recognize that transformation is not just a future hope, but a present reality made possible by God’s grace.
Here are three truths from this passage:
We are united with Christ in His death and resurrection. Baptism symbolizes our participation in Christ’s death and resurrection. Just as He was raised, we too rise to live a new life. Our identity is no longer defined by sin but by Christ’s victory. This new identity invites us to live with confidence in the power of Christ’s resurrection, relying on Him each day to shape our thoughts, desires, and actions.
Sin’s dominion is broken. Our old self was crucified with Christ so that sin’s power might be destroyed. We are no longer slaves to sin but set free to serve God. Because we share in the life of Christ, we are called to live with this new freedom, consciously choosing to reject the rule of sin and instead yield every part of ourselves to God’s purpose
Grace empowers obedience. Grace transforms our desires and actions, making holiness possible. We live not under law but under grace, which secures our freedom. This means that as we yield ourselves to God, His grace actively shapes our daily choices and attitudes, fostering genuine transformation from within. Rather than striving in our own strength, we depend on the Spirit to cultivate a lifestyle that reflects Christ’s character and values.
This passage reminds us that the gospel does not merely forgive, it transforms. Grace breaks sin’s chains and empowers us to live alive to God. Our new life is marked by freedom, identity, and obedience in Christ.
