Scripture Reading: John 20:1–18
Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” John 20:17
Following Jesus’ crucifixion and burial, His disciples were going through a period of grief and loss for their teacher and friend. Their Messiah’s death left them hopeless and in despair, until something remarkable happened. As the dawn broke and the empty tomb was discovered, the reality of the Risen King began to transform their sorrow into hope.
Here are two truths about this passage: • Jesus conquers death. The empty tomb is heaven’s declaration of victory. Jesus, once crucified, now reigns as the living King who has broken the power of sin and death forever. Because Jesus has triumphed over the grave, His victory brings hope and renewal to all who trust in Him. • Jesus’ resurrection welcomes us into God’s family. Mary’s grief was transformed to happiness when Jesus addressed her by name. Afterwards, Jesus instructed Mary to share the good news with His followers: “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” (John 20:17). This statement holds a truly remarkable message.
The resurrection is not only proof of Jesus’s victory. It is the doorway into God’s family. The Risen King reigns with power and welcome His people into intimacy with the Father.
