Scripture Reading: John 19:17–27
Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull… There they crucified him… Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” John 19:17–19
Pilate succumbed to the pressure of the Jewish leaders and delivered Jesus to them to be crucified as they requested. The King of all kings was humiliated, beaten and battered by the Roman soldiers. The Creator of all things staggered under the weight of His cross to the place He was crucified.
Here are three truths from today’s passage: • Jesus bore the cross for us. He carried His own cross to Golgotha, embracing the weight of our sin and shame. His suffering was not forced upon Him—He willingly bore it for our salvation. • Jesus’s kingship was proclaimed even in death. The inscription above Him declared His title in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek: “The King of the Jews.” Although this was meant as mockery, it became a universal witness to His true identity. • Jesus’s love endured in agony. Even while crucified, He cared for His mother and entrusted her to the beloved disciple. His care for those around Him, even as He hung on the cross, revealed the depth of His kingly character.
The cross is the throne of the Crucified King. His crown is of thorns, His robe is of mockery, yet His reign is eternal. In His crucifixion, we see the paradox of glory through suffering, victory through apparent defeat, and kingship through sacrifice.
Pray with me: Lord Jesus, thank You for bearing my sin and shame on the cross. Help me to live under Your rule and to proclaim Your kingship in my life.
