Scripture Reading: John 19:1–16
Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews. But they shouted, ‘Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!’” John 19:14–15
In today’s passage, we see Pilate repeatedly declares Jesus innocent. Yet under pressure from the crowd and the chief priests, he hands Him over to be crucified. The guiltless One is condemned so that the guilty might be set free. This is the heart of the gospel: the innocent Savior bearing the judgment we deserved.
Here are three truths from today’s passage: • Jesus was guiltless before God and man. Even Pilate could find no fault in Him and publicly declared Jesus as innocent. Although Jesus was declared guiltless by Pilate, yet He was handed over to be crucified. • Jesus bore our condemnation to bring salvation. Jesus’ wrongful conviction is not just a historical event; it is the doorway through which salvation comes to mankind. His suffering and death on the cross provide the means for our acquittal before God. • Jesus fulfills God’s sovereign plan. Even as Jesus stands before Pilate, He reminds him that all authority comes from above. In the midst of this trial, Jesus affirms that God’s plan is unfolding.
At the core of the gospel is the reality that Jesus, the guiltless Son of God, was condemned so that humanity could be redeemed. He died for our sins, taking upon Himself the condemnation that we deserved.
Pray with me: Lord Jesus, thank You for bearing my guilt and shame. Help me to live in the freedom of Your sacrifice, to honor You as my King.
