Scripture Reading: John 18: 15–27.
Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?” … Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow. John 18:26–27
Peter, who had boldly declared his loyalty and even drawn his sword in the garden, now falters before a servant girl and others around the fire. Fear silences his faith, and three times he denies knowing Jesus. Peter’s journey in this passage is relatable because it reveals the tension between wanting to follow Jesus and the real fear that can grip us in challenging circumstances.
In the same passage, we witness the unwavering resolve of Christ. While Peter’s courage falters and his words betray him, Jesus remains steadfast in the face of interrogation and adversity.
Here are two truths from this passage:
- Fear can silence faith. Peter’s denial shows how fear of rejection or danger can cause even the strongest disciple to falter. It reminds us that courage in Christ is not about our strength but about reliance on Him.
- Courage stands firm in truth. While Peter denies knowing Jesus, Jesus was courageous in the face of trials. He declares that His teaching has always been open and public and challenges His accusers to bear witness.
This scene reminds us that discipleship is tested in the fire of opposition. Fear may cause us to stumble, but Jesus’s truth remains unshaken. And even when we fail, His grace restores.
