Scripture Reading: John 18: 1–14.
Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” John 18:11
After praying for His disciples and for all believers, Judas arrives with soldiers and officials, armed with torches and weapons. Yet Jesus, fully aware of what is to come, does not shrink back. He steps forward, identifies Himself, and protects His disciples. Even in His arrest, He fulfills His promise: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”
Here are three truths from this passage:
- Jesus embraces the Father’s will. When Peter lashes out in defense, Jesus rebukes him: “Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” His arrest is not defeat but obedience. The “cup” symbolizes His suffering and sacrifice, willingly accepted as part of God’s redemptive plan.
- Jesus protects His disciples. Even in the moment of betrayal, Jesus ensures His followers are spared: “If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” His shepherd’s heart is evident. He lays down His life while guarding His flock.
- Jesus reveals His authority. When He declares “I am he,” the soldiers fall back. This shows His divine authority even in surrender. He is not overpowered; He willingly yields.
The garden scene reminds us that Jesus’s path was a chosen one. He drank the cup of suffering so that we might drink the cup of salvation.
Pray with me: Lord Jesus, thank You for drinking the cup the Father gave You. Help me to trust Your authority, rest in Your protection, and walk in obedience to the Father’s will.
