Scripture Reading: John 16:1–15.

But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” — John 16:7

Jesus’s words must have startled His disciples. How could His leaving possibly be “for their good”? He went ahead to reveal the mystery: His departure would usher in the Spirit’s arrival. The Spirit’s ministry is essential. Through Him, the presence of Christ is multiplied, the truth of God is illuminated, and the mission of the church is empowered.

Let’s look at three dimensions of the Spirit’s ministry from today’s passage:

  1. The Holy Spirit Convicts the World. The Spirit exposes reality. He convicts the world of sin righteousness, and judgment. The Spirit does not simply condemn; rather, He reveals the true state of our hearts and points us to Christ as the answer.
  2. The Holy Spirit Guides the Believer. Jesus acknowledges that His disciples cannot bear everything at once. But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide them step by step, unfolding God’s wisdom in season.
  3. The Holy Spirit Glorifies Jesus. The Spirit’s ultimate aim is to magnify Jesus. He takes what belongs to Christ and makes it known to us. His ministry is Christ-centered, ensuring that all revelation points back to the Son.

The ministry of the Holy Spirit is both outward and inward. Outwardly, He convicts the world of its need for Christ. Inwardly, He guides, teaches, and strengthens believers.

Declare today: Holy Spirit, thank You for Your ministry in my life. Convict me where I need correction, guide me into truth, and let Christ be glorified in all I do.
