Scripture Reading: John 13:18–38.
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35.
Jesus has just washed the disciples’ feet, performing the humble act that demonstrated His deep love and servant-hearted leadership. After this powerful moment, He went ahead and revealed that one of them would betray Him.
Jesus proceeded to inform the disciples that His time with them would soon come to an end. Then He added a very significant statement; “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another…”
Here are two important lessons to highlight from this passage:
- Love is a command to obey and not a suggestion to consider. Jesus did not suggest love to His disciples as an ideal way of life, rather He commanded them to love, like He did. Jesus loved in a way that put others first, even when it cost Him greatly.
- Love is the mark of true discipleship. When we choose to love as Jesus did, others will see His presence in our lives and be drawn to the gospel through our actions. This command challenges us to rise above personal grievances and differences, striving instead to embody the compassion and grace that Jesus modeled.
Obeying this command requires intentionality and perseverance. It means choosing to love even when it is difficult, uncomfortable, or undeserved.
Declare today: “Lord, teach me to love as You have loved me; sacrificially, consistently, and without condition. Let my life reflect Your heart and let my love point others to You.”
