Scripture Reading: John 13:1–17.

Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power… so he get up from the meal… and began to wash his disciples’ feet.” — John 13:3–5

At this point in His ministry, Jesus was fully aware of the suffering and sacrifice that awaited Him, as well as the completion of His mission. He understood both His divine origin and His impending return to the Father. Despite possessing absolute authority, Jesus chose to serve rather than to assert His status. He demonstrated humility by washing the feet of His disciples.

Here are three lessons from this passage:

  1. Service as the true measure of love and greatness. In God’s kingdom, authority is exercised through service rather than control. Jesus didn’t serve in spite of His power—He served because of it, indicating that genuine leadership involves serving other.
  2. Unless Jesus washes us, we have no part in Him. Peter, baffled by the Lord’s actions, initially resisted: “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” (John 13:6). Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me” (John 13:8). This exchange reveals a deeper truth—Jesus is not only offering a lesson in humility but also pointing to the necessity of spiritual renewal.
  3. Jesus calls us to follow, not just admire. Jesus’ invitation is not to mere admiration of His example, but to active participation in His way of life. “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you,” He tells His disciples (John 13:15).

Jesus, the serving Master, demonstrates true greatness by humbly serving others, and asks us to follow His example.

Declaration: Lord Jesus, You are my Master, and yet You served. Teach me to lead like You. Let my authority be clothed in humility, my influence shaped by love, and my life marked by service. May I follow Your example—not just in word, but in action.
