You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.” — John 11:50
The news of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead spread like wildfire. Many people witnessed this undeniable miracle. Many who witnessed it believed in Jesus. Some, however, ran to report Jesus to the Pharisees.
The religious leaders became worried. Their concern was political: “If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will take away both our temple and our nation.” They began to scheme on how to get rid of Jesus. In the midst of their scheming, the high priest, Caiaphas, unknowingly spoke a prophecy that pointed to the heart of God’s redemptive plan: “It is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”
This passage reveals two profound truths:
- God’s sovereignty over human schemes. The Jewish leaders plotted to protect their position. But their actions fulfilled prophecy. Even in opposition, God’s plan unfolds. The scheming of the Pharisees set in motion events that would lead Jesus directly to the cross.
- Jesus’s sacrifice was intentional and inclusive. Caiaphas spoke of one man dying for the nation. But God’s plan was bigger—Jesus would die for all, to unite and redeem. God’s plan of salvation is beyond the nation of Israel. It is for the entire human race.
This passage reminds us that even when circumstances seem driven by self-interest or opposition, God's purpose cannot be thwarted. What others mean for harm, He uses for redemption.
Declare today: Lord, I trust Your sovereignty. Your plan stands firm. regardles of the enemy's plot. Thank You for the sacrifice that gathers us into one—redeemed, restored, and secure in Your love.
