Scripture Reading: John 6:20
But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” John 6:20.
Fear is an emotion we all feel usually when we sense danger or feel we are in an unsafe situation. It is an unpleasant feeling. But as terrifying as this feeling could be, there is no stronger or better emotion than hearing a familiar and assuring voice of someone who can help you in that situation saying to you, I’m here, don’t be afraid. It opens the flood gate of peace, and your fear begins to dissipate. This was what happened to the disciples. They suddenly found themselves amid a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee without Jesus in the boat with them. They were terrified! But suddenly Jesus walked through the storm towards them and called out to them, I’m here, don’t be afraid.
This incident teaches us that even when we feel isolated or overwhelmed by life's challenges, the voice of Jesus will ring through the storm and bring His reassuring peace into our situation. His assurance, “It is I; don’t be afraid,” calls us to place our trust in Him, knowing that His presence brings hope and courage in the midst of uncertainty. The disciples’ experience in the storm teaches us that even when the intensity of the dark storm seems to hide Jesus’ face from us, Jesus is near, ready to bring peace and stability to our hearts. By trusting in Him, we can face our fears knowing we are not alone, and that His power is greater than any storm we encounter.
This story, just like the story of Jesus feeding the crowd (John 6:1-15), reminds us that Jesus meets us where we are—whether in need or in fear—and provides exactly what is necessary for the moment. His actions reveal not only His divine power but also His personal care for each individual. We are encouraged to trust Him with our needs and anxieties, confident that He sees, understands, and will act on our behalf, sometimes in unexpected and miraculous ways. And however dark the night might be, let his reassuring words light your heart, ‘Do not be afraid’.
