Scripture Reading: John 5:39-40
You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life. John 5:39-40
After being questioned for healing on the Sabbath, Jesus declared His divine authority, provoking anger among the leaders. Jesus addressed them, unequivocally stating to them the He was the Son of God. This angered them the more and they sought to kill Him.
Jesus pointed out that while the religious leaders devoted themselves to the study of Scripture, they missed its central message: all of it points to Him as the source of true life. Instead of recognizing the fulfillment of God’s promises standing before them, they clung to their traditions and interpretations, refusing to come to Jesus for the eternal life they so deeply sought.
Jesus’s words reveal a crucial truth: the Scriptures are not an end in themselves, but a witness directing us to Him. Despite their dedication to searching the sacred texts, the religious leaders failed to recognize that every promise, prophecy, and teaching ultimately pointed to the Messiah. Eternal life is not found in mere knowledge or ritual, but in a living relationship with Jesus, who fulfills what the Scriptures proclaim.
This passage challenges us to examine our own approach to the Scripture. It is possible to be deeply familiar with scripture texts yet miss their true purpose if we do not allow them to lead to a genuine encounter with Christ. Jesus calls us to move beyond intellectual understanding and religious routine toward a wholehearted acceptance of Him as the fulfillment of God’s promises. This is how we can find life. True life is found in the person to whom the Scriptures ultimately point—Jesus Himself.
