My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. John 4:34
Jesus, weary and hungry from his travels, spoke with a Samaritan woman while awaiting his disciples. The woman, fascinated by the things Jesus told her, went into the city to call her people to come listen to Jesus.
When his disciples urged him to eat, he replied that his nourishment was doing God's will and fulfilling his mission.
This profound statement shows Jesus’ burning passion to complete his earthly mission of reconciling the world to God. This statement reflected Jesus' commitment to his purpose, prioritizing spiritual goals over physical needs.
Jesus, probably filled with empathy for the spiritual state of the Samaritan woman and her community would easily forgo food, though hungry and tired, to bring the people to the light. The desire to see mankind reconciled with God overwhelm his hunger for physical food. This attitude of devoting everything to pursue the fulfilment of God’s will on earth is a pattern for believers in this present age.
Jesus demonstrated that obedience to God surpasses even basic human needs. His response highlights that fulfilling God's will brings a nourishment and satisfaction that physical food cannot provide. This perspective invites us as believers to consider what truly sustains and satisfies us, pointing to the importance of pursuing God's purpose above all else.
Our satisfaction must be that God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven. When we align our priorities with God’s will, we experience true satisfaction and a deeper connection with Him, even in the midst of personal challenges or discomfort.
