The bride belongs to the bridegroom... He must become greater; I must become less.” John 3:29-30
Following John the Baptist’s introduction of Jesus to the public, John’s disciples expressed concern that more individuals were now seeking out Jesus for baptism than had previously come to John. John’s response to this observation reflects his clear understanding of both his own mission and the unique purpose of Jesus.
Although his disciples may have perceived this development as a threat, John responded with composure and satisfaction. He clarified that he was not the Messiah but had been appointed to prepare people for the Messiah’s arrival. John emphasized that he was not the focal point of the divine plan—Jesus was.
Demonstrating humility, John acknowledged that his role was preparatory rather than competitive. He recognized Jesus as the promised Messiah, asserting that ultimate attention and devotion should be directed toward Him. This perspective serves as an important model for contemporary believers, underscoring the importance of centering one’s life around Christ and His mission.
Believers are encouraged to adopt this same mindset: prioritizing Jesus as the central focus. The primary objective is to guide others to Jesus rather than draw attention to oneself. All individuals, despite their spiritual redemption and aspirations, possess inherent imperfections; only Jesus serves as the flawless example and the true source of complete salvation.
Like John, fulfillment of purpose is realized when Jesus is honored and made known through our actions and lives. In every dimension of faith, it is essential to continually redirect attention towards Jesus, allowing His leadership to shape decisions, behaviors, and relationships. When focus strays from Him, there is a risk of losing connection with the true foundation of hope and transformation. By keeping Christ at the center, believers convey His love, grace, and truth to those around them.
