His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” John 2:5
Jesus, his mother and his disciples were a guest at a wedding. But suddenly they ran out of wine and Jesus’ mother sought her help.
Mary the mother of Jesus made a statement to the servants at the wedding the summarizes the way we should relate with Jesus; “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
This attitude of obedience becomes the foundation for a vibrant faith. By listening attentively and acting on Jesus’ instructions, we open ourselves to the miracles and blessings that flow from aligning our lives with his will. Even when his guidance challenges our expectations or requires us to step out in faith, trusting and obeying Jesus leads to transformation and deeper understanding of God’s purpose for us.
Mary’s instruction stems from his relationship with Jesus. She knows nothing is impossible with him. Her confidence is rooted in both experience and faith, encouraging us to approach Jesus with the same trust and expectation. When we choose to follow his instructions, even in situations that seem dire or confusing, we position ourselves to witness God's power at work in our lives.
But it takes a servant to carry out Jesus’ instruction. To the natural mind, it made no sense. But these servant shas been instructed; “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
Obedience, then, is not simply a duty but an invitation to participate in God's ongoing work. When we respond to Jesus’ directions—even when they defy our logic or comfort—we become active participants in a story far greater than our own. Our willingness to act in faith opens the door for God’s presence and power to be revealed, both in our circumstances and in the lives of those around us.
